Ripon & District Backwood Cooking Competition for Scouts

Topcliffe Take The Trophy

Here is a report from Dave Baker of 1st Topcliffe Scouts:

RDBWOn a Sunday in late March, Scouts from across Ripon & District entered and competed against each other in the Annual Backwoods Cooking competition held at 'The Loop' Nature Reserve near Ripon. The event was kindly organised by Colin Slator and his wife for the benefit of the Scouts who attended.

12 teams from a range of Scout Groups in the District took part in the event, with each team given the same provisions to prepare and cook. These included rabbit, pigeon, sausages, bananas and chocolate.

Teams of Scouts were tasked with preparing and lighting their own fires, skinning rabbits, and preparing and cooking their other rations within a two and a half hour time limit.

The Scouts were judged by Colin on the following areas: Fire preparation skills, preparation of the rabbit and pigeon, inclusiveness, teamwork and how tidy they left their areas afterwards.

Following the conclusion of the event, Colin thanked everyone who attended and carried out a brief presentation.

Congratulations to 1st Topcliffe Scouts 'Team 2' who won this year's District Backwoods Cooking Competition with a total score of 88 points. 1st Topcliffe Scouts were presented with the District Fellowship (now called DAS) trophy for 2017.

Well done to Topcliffe 'Team 2' - Mark Swales, Grace Clayton, Ollie Price, Chloe Sloan-Mason & Jamie Williamson on a brilliant effort.
