Funeral arrangements updated - now 13.40hrs
The condolences, prayers and thoughts of the County Commissioner and all members of North Yorkshire Scouts are today with the family of Ann Shannon (York Minster District) who sadly passed away recently after a relatively short illness. A legendary Cub Scout Leader not only in York and North Yorkshire, but beyond the County and also overseas. Her positive and outstanding contribution to the lives of so many young people will endure. We have lost a great leader and friend.
This from Michael Leadbetter, GSL of 1st Huntington Group:
"Ann had been a leader within the Scout Movement for over 45 years, and had been with us at 1st Huntington for nearly 40 years. Ann will have influenced so many on their scouting journey, from her role as a leader with Cubs, her work as a Commissioner for Cub Scouts supporting so many other leaders, organising and planning District and County events and in recent years trips to Africa.
Her generosity and commitment knew no bounds, I have fond memories from my time with Apollo Cubs and she was rightly recognised by the Scout Association, being awarded the Medal of Merit, The Silver Acorn, The Bar to the Silver Acorn and the Silver Wolf, but her real achievement must have been giving so many the skills and knowledge with which to head into their life."
Arrangements for the Funeral
This from Simon Errington:
As you will be aware, sadly Ann Shannon passed away a short while ago, I am now in the position to advise you of the funeral arrangements which have been agreed with the family and funeral director. Ann was special to many across the City, County, Country and World for her contribution to Scouting. To acknowledge this, the following arrangements have been put in place to provide Ann and her family with recognition of her Scouting.
The funeral arrangement are:
Location: York Crematorium, Bishopthorpe, York
Date: 29th August 2019
Parking: If possible, could you please consider car sharing to ovoid parking issues at the Crematorium
Flowers: Family flowers only – Donations are being split between York Minster District Scouts and ShelterBox Charity
It has been agreed with Colin Shannon and the wider family that Scouting/Guiding and the Royal British Legion will provide a guard of honour, lining the route from the Crematorium Carpark to the entrance of the Crematorium building.
If you would like to be a part of this guard of honour I ask that you attend in full uniform and arrive in good time to line the route described above. I would ask that we assemble at the carpark entrance at 13.20hrs.
The plan is to parade a Cub Scout Flag and the standard of the Royal British Legion behind the hearse and family cars, with the guard standing to attention and taking a salute as the cars approach, once the cars have past the guard will then follow the flags in rows of 4 forming a parade to where the cars halt. The parade will then stand down and join the service.
I would encourage as many as possible to attend in uniform and support the guard of honour.
