17AW009 Sailsport Beginners

Scouts/Explorers/Network/Leaders/Parents- Never Sailed before? Then this is the course for you

About The Course

Sailing is FUN, EXCITING and EXILARATING. This is a one day event to introduce you to sailing. Sucessful completion of this course may qualify you for your Scout Sailsport Stage 1 badge and may also qualify you towards your RYA Junior Scheme Stage 1.

What Can I Achieve

Youth Sailing Scheme – This is for Cubs up to Scouts. If you are an explorer just starting to sail, then the adult scheme may be the better course to start. This scheme has four stages, called Start Sailing and on completing them you can then go on to the advanced skills modules of the adult training scheme. All levels work on the knowledge and experience gained in the previous one and introduces something new.

The adult training scheme – This has three levels to start and then splits into advanced modules, which you can mix and match depending on the type of sailing you wish to pursue. Like the Youth Sailing Scheme, each level works on knowledge and experience gained in the previous one and introduces something new.

The nature and technicality of the sport does mean that you may not fully complete a level of the scheme you are training under in one day. Your instructor will "sign off" individual elements in your logbook as they are completed.

I'm new to Sailing?

As a Cub or Scout you will start on the path of the Youth Sailing Scheme.
As an Explorer you will start on the adult training scheme.
If you are a member of the Scout Network or a Leader, then you will undertake the adult training.

I've nearly completed a Youth Sailing Stage 1 or Log Book?

This day is still for you. With guidance from your instructor you will be able to tick of more skills in your log book and maybe complete the book to gain your Cub or Scout Activity Badge. So DON'T forget your Log Book! Explorers with an incomplete Youth Sailing Scheme Stage Logbook will need to complete that stage before transferring to the adult scheme.

Your Day

On arrival, and after a centre briefing, you will have a short discussion with your instructor about what you want out of the day and the format of the training. Then it's on the water for lots of FUN, learning new skills or refining old. Feedback on your achievements' will be given by your instructor at the end of the day with an action plan on where to go next.
